Calne is a country town situated in the County of Wiltshire.
Wiltshire is one of England's most interesting counties and has superb Chalk Downland & Valley scenery. It is well-known for its many Neolithic Sites, including Stone Henge and Avebury Stone Circle, and its White Horses & Bronze Age Earth Works.
Calne itself has an interesting history - it was formerly a town that grew with the woollen industry because of its woollen mills; this industry has now disappeared from the town (although there are plenty of sheep on the hills!).
Next, Calne became well known for its pork industry via the company Harris's. Harris's was renowned for its pork products, especially pies and sausages.
Now both the Wool & Pork industries have left the town, but a reminder of them is provided by the bronze castings of Sheep and Pigs at either end of the town precinct.
The town has a large Parish church called St Mary's the tower of which can be seen from most of the town. St. Mary's is a traditional stone-built church dating from about 750 years ago.
