Calne was pleased to receive visits from 24 Charlieu Twins,
24 Eningen Twins & 12 Caln Township Twins
over the weekend of 17th- 21st June,
the date being chosen to coincide with the Calne Festival.
The visit celebrated 40 years of Twinning between Calne and Charlieu.
A most enjoyable weekend was had by all and we are all most grateful
to the Hosts for the fantastic effort they made for us all.
Also we greatly appreciate the help received from the Calne Town Council

Guests & Hosts travelled in two coaches to Gloucester. The first stop allowed us to browse the shops in the Quays Outlet Centre. Then we all met at a quayside restaurant for lunch. By happy chance, a World Cup Football match was being played / shown on their Televisions. (Perhaps?) even happier was that one of the teams playing was Germany - the Eningen members enjoyed seeing their team, others enjoyed watching their faces as the match progressed! After lunch we could have a further look around, with most making their way to the Cathedral for a conducted tour. ~ The Evening was spent with Hosts and Guests making their own arrangements.. |

Morning Competition: Representatives of each Twin Town competed in an Archery Trial with the Winners being awarded the 'Teddy Bear Cup'. ~ The afternoon saw the Town's Carnival Parade - Many town organisations and many twinners gathered at North Star and paraded through the town at a speed determined by the Major Wrecks - very slow, poor old things! ~ An Evening reception for all was held in the new Beversbrook facilty - Music, Dance, Food & Drink - Speeches and Renewal of Twinning Promises. |

| Sunday | Unfortunately, some Charlieu visitors had to depart in the morning. For others the middle part of the day was occupied by a new town event. a couple of dozen Town Criers, together with their partners, had lunch in the Town Hall with the Mayor and Councillors. Afterwards they all paraded around the town and returned to the Beach Terrace. There a Town Crying competition was held: each Town Crier performed outside 'The Olive Tree' and cried over the River Marden to where the judges were seated. Many Townsfolk and many Twinners spent an enjoyable time watching and listening to the event. The setting by the river was very impressive. Subsequently it was learnt that the Town Criers themselves were very pleased with the event and expressed a wish for it to become an annual event. Early evening had the Bell ringers attempt a Quarter Peal and then a special Evensong Service was held in St Mary's Parish Church. Later all attended a barbeque kindly laid on by Christine and Barry - a very enjoyable close to the day. |
